Improvements to the home dashboard available in [Public preview feedback]

We're testing improvements to the content and layout of the home dashboard (github.com for logged in users), designed to enable users to understand the current status of their most important work and navigate to it quickly from a single view 🙌 . The default view of the home dashboard now shows a short, customizable list of pull requests and issues. The feed view is still available.

Note: This preview is enabled for a subset of users to start, and rolling out to more over time 📈 .

What's changed

• We created new My Work and Feed tabs.
• The My Work tab shows users their most-recently updated pull requests and issues, with filtering options to customize the lists.
• For pull requests the user has authored, actionable next steps are shown.
• The feed hasn't changed, but it's now behind the Feed tab. If you prefer the feed, your tab selection is persistent.

Wow. THANK YOU. ❤️ This makes the home page usable! Seeing a list of public repositories and comments that people I follow make, has never made sense to me. I want my home page to be a list of actionable information that I can use to navigate the various organizations, issues, PRs, and projects that I'm involved with on a day-to-day basis and this looks like exactly what I've been wanting!

Thanks for the feedback! I have a couple follow up questions if you don't mind.

• When you say "organizations" what specifically are you referring to in your workflow? Are those project teams, repos, "GitHub Organizations"?
• Same question for the "projects" you mention – are these repos or actual "GitHub Projects"?

(GitHub uses a few specific in-product terms that can mean a few different things casually, so I want to double check)

Yeah, it's a smattering of all the above, I believe:

• I have personal repositories that are part of client projects. Seeing a subset of my personal repositories that I want to keep a close eye on (my clients' projects) would be really nice.
• I have GitHub organizations' repositories that I am responsible for, though I do not own that organization (fractional CTO stuff). For example, I belong to one organization in particular where there are 2 large projects that I bounce back and forth between a lot for issues, projects, and pull requests.
• Finally, yes, I also have a few proper GitHub Projects that are scattered between both of the aforementioned repositories, and a few in my personal repositories as well.

My dream would be to see a list of "Actionable Items" on my homepage. 90% of my GitHub workflow is hitting Cmd+T to open a new tab, typing "git", hitting "Enter" to go to github.com, and then immediately going to the inbox so I can see what needs my attention. Removing that navigation so I can see things that need my attention right on the home page would be very nice.

Spent like 10 minutes trying to figure out where my news feed is gone. Even asked Copilot lol.

Can you make this tab secondary and news feed primary?

Switching to the feeds tab saves it, though, so any time you go back home it should still be on the feeds tab

I do appreciate having a "priority" tab with Issues and PRs. But, I do not like how it is sandwiched between two navigation bars. If we have a My Work tab, shouldn't the left-side nav with "top repos" be its own tab? I'd think this would make navigating the dashboard less cluttered. IMHO.

I like the FEED first and now the MY WORK, because my work i already check/see by project that im working. When i go to my home, i only see the feed, not the project that im already working. It is redundant.

I love the new homepage. I still feel that the feed alone is pretty useless for people who actively contribute to personal and non-personal repositories. It would be great to have a summary created by Copilot that highlights the latest updates to my work, such as summarising new comments on my pull requests and issues.

I'm curious to hear from other folks here how they would include some kind of Copilot summary. My team has experimented a little with this, but we didn't feel like we nailed it as users had diverse expectations around what was important to them to know.

Curious if you could tell me with a little more detail what "latest updates" you would want from Copilot?

Do you happen to have some examples of prompts or summarizations that you think works well?

We should be able to choose if pr or filters, and maybe we can choose which repo we would like to see first. I have to "Open" work but it's a repo we do not use it anymore in the company.

Is there any missing information or context in the issues and PR lists that you'd like to see? Why?
We do not use github issues, so it is noice for us. And I would like to see which PR i am waiting feedback, which PR the a college needs me to do feedback.

What other modules or content would you like to see on the dashboard?
Maybe when colleges of my org do big events, like merge to main or so on, even if I am not related

The "My Work" tab is really cool. It would be great to be able remove entries from the "My Work" groups. E.g. I have PRs and issues that are blocked on other things so don't need to see them right now. It would also be cool to be able to filter them per GitHub Org and to have the option to default to "Feed" instead of "My Work".

This is a great change. However, I'd like something more like Gerrit where I can see work where it is my turn, i.e. not just PRs I've opened. Can I have a filter that is both my work, and PRs I currently need to review? Alternatively, can I have a separate section for PRs I currently need to review?

Edit: I see the filter for PRs is additive, but context is sort of lacking. I'd like it to display whether I have something to do, or if it is waiting on the author of the PR. As an example, if I have left a review, currently there is nothing indicating that the review is unresolved by the author.

We made the choice to only show suggested next steps on PRs that you authored. But it sounds like you want to know the status for any PR you're paying attention to.

As an example, if I have left a review, currently there is nothing indicating that the review is unresolved by the author.

So in this case, you want to know whether need to take a look at the PR or if you've already actioned it, correct?

Yes, basically I'd like to see PRs where I need to take action next, sort of like a work queue. If someone responds to my review, I'll have to check out their resolution of the PR. If someone reviewed my PR, I'll need to address it. But otherwise most of the time I do not care about the PRs, since there is nothing actionable for me.

Gerrit solves this with attention sets; I'm not asking GitHub to do this 1:1 necessarily, but I always found the model works really well: https://gerrit-review.googlesource.com/Documentation/user-attention-set.html

Love this, especially status (e.g., Resolve conversations, Address feedback, Waiting on reviewers). Status can be enhanced, but first look is awseome.

One thing I wish is, could you add "hide button" for Issue/PR? They still exist in the feeds although "unsubscribe" them.

I would like to apply filters, such as displaying only pull requests or issues that are assigned to me, excluding those I have ONLY opened or interacted with. Additionally, controlling the time span would be interesting, as I have over five years of abandoned issues and projects that I prefer to disregard.

EDIT: Actually this is already implemented, but i need to remove the filter "involves me" to reflects properly what I want.

Woo, love to see it! Would be nice to filter out any PRs that are older than 6 months by default. I have a bunch showing up from random repos from years ago even. Else would be nice to be able to hide them individually. Both would solve the problem!

Nitpick: There's a bit too much spacing between the title and the description.

Would also be nice to be able to click on the repo directly from the metadata description on the item itself. Always free for any user research / feedback 😛
