student unable to accept invite

Hi everyone,

I created an org and created a template in it. I created a classroom called classroom. In the classroom I created an assignment off the template. 17 students accepted the assignment link and created their repos. 1 student accepted and got the following sequence of messages:

repository You accepted the assignment, python . We're configuring your repository now. This may take a few minutes to complete. Refresh this page to see updates.

after a few minutes they get: repository You accepted the assignment, python but something went wrong. We have not received any updates for this assignment. You may want to reaccept the assignment.

then they get: Accept the assignment — python Once you accept this assignment, you will be granted access to the python-rsail repository in the babson-org organization on GitHub.

and then they get: Repository Access Issue You no longer have access to your assignment repository. Contact your teacher for support

I have deleted their repo from the org but keep getting the same sequence of messages. What am I doing wrong?

Problem

• Students accept the GitHub Classroom assignment.
• Repo creation starts but fails with “something went wrong”.
• They are asked to reaccept, then lose repo access.
• Even after deleting repos, the same issue happens.

Likely Causes

1. Org permissions: Students may not have proper access to the org or repo template.
2. Template repo visibility: The assignment template might be private or missing required settings.
3. Third-party app access: GitHub Classroom requires that students allow access in their GitHub account settings.
4. Repository limits: The org may have reached limits (private repos, seat restrictions, etc.).

Suggested Fix

• Make sure the template repository is inside the same organization and is accessible.
• Check org member permissions: students must be members or have invite accepted.
• Ask students to enable third-party application access for GitHub Classroom under Settings → Applications → Authorized OAuth Apps.
• Try creating a new test classroom/assignment with a fresh template repo to confirm if the issue is org-specific.

If the problem persists, open a ticket with GitHub Education support including the org name and classroom link.

thanks for the suggestions. I ended up deleting the invitation mannually and then adding the student mannually as a collabrator. GitHub is pretty amazing but what a steep learning curve.
